Our Curriculum Intent: Look Up, Aim High, Shine Bright!

“You are the light of the world..”(Matthew 5:14)

At Sherburn Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is designed to be a beacon of inspiration. We believe that every child is created with unique gifts, and it is our mission to help them Look Up with wonder, Aim High with confidence, and Shine Bright as a light in their community and the wider world.

Our Vision: Flourishing Through Faith and Excellence

Rooted in our Christian identity and our Trust values of Excellence, Belonging, Trust, and Respect, we provide a nurturing environment where every child is valued. We ensure that each pupil develops their own “voice and identity” while understanding the importance of being part of a team. We foster individuals who are:

  • Respectful and Kind: Reflecting our school values in their daily interactions.

  • Resilient and Independent: Developing the “inquiring minds” needed to thrive from a very young age.

  • Courageous Learners: Empowered by curiosity and enthusiasm to become lifelong learners.

An Odyssey of Discovery: Our Thematic Approach

We bring learning to life through a vibrant, whole-school thematic approach. These thought-provoking themes act as a golden thread, connecting our classes and fostering a shared sense of purpose. Our knowledge-rich curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, encouraging children to ask big questions about the world God created. We aim to empower our children to move confidently onto the next phase of their lives, ready to make a positive impact.

A Dynamic Learning Journey

To ensure a broad, balanced, and deeply immersive experience, Sherburn operates on a sophisticated rolling cycle. This allows for deep subject mastery and a wide breadth of knowledge:

  • EYFS & Key Stage 1: A vibrant 2-year rolling cycle (Year A and Year B).

  • Key Stage 2: An ambitious 4-year rolling cycle (Year A, B, C, and D) for core thematic subjects.

  • Specialist Cycles: For Science, PSHE, and French, Key Stage 2 follows a focused 2-year rolling programme to ensure key concepts are revisited and embedded.

Current Compass: Our invigorated curriculum journey began in 2024, with all our “lights” currently shining through the learning of Year B.

At Sherburn, we don’t just teach; we inspire. We challenge our children every day to look up at the possibilities, aim high in their journey of faith and learning, and shine bright so that their light may be seen by all.

The National Curriculum sets out the minimum content for our curriculum. Please use the links below to find out what our children will be taught.
